So I have been taking advantage of all
the networking opportunities, today they had a meeting of the all the
interviewees for the assistant to the town manager position. I went
into the meet and greet to network with all applicants. I was talking
to a gentleman from Settle, WA and we talked about
school and his public service commitment. He enjoys working for his city
but wishes to advance in his career so he threw his name in at the
Town of Gilbert. Talking with him and a few others put things into
perspective to me a little. The commitment to public service, the
willingness to change your location and move your family to pursue a
career you enjoy to do. I am still not sure I necessarily want to go
and work for my tribe, but irregardless if I do or not I will
continue to help them, maybe consult. I know how to approach I and
think it is my obligation to serve the public and tribal members on
my reservation. I know there will be a time when I may want to leave
the tribal government to work at another level/form of government and
with talking to these applicants I understand if you truly like
helping others you will take your show on the road. Everyone I talked
to offered advice on my educational goals, and told me to stay
focused and I will be joining them in working in government in no
time. I'm networking at a descent rate and I really think I am almost
ready and can't wait to get out there.

Skye,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your post. I think networking is so important and maybe even more important than education itself. We truly do live in a society based on "who you know and not what you know." I have come to find this statement to be true as I come to the end of my internship. CSA has introduced me to many people over the course of my internship, specifically trying to line me up a job for when the internship ends. CSA was successful at doing this, as I will begin my new job in December. I am beyond excited and I think students need to be made more aware of networking and its importance. We all need to get out and talk to as many people as possible!
Hi Skye,
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you had a great experience networking and you are going into them open to receive feedback and learn from others. I’d agree that sometimes the best way for you to effectively serve the community means moving where your skills and abilities are best suited and provides you the best growth opportunity even if that means taking a job in a new location. As long as you feel you could be happy and connected in the new location.
I wish you the best of luck as you reach for your dreams.
Kind Regards,
Robin
Skye,
ReplyDeleteI really like how similar we enjoy networking and becoming marketable. Feedback is key in this field, as I am realizing more and more. Perspective is a great thing to gain from these kind of experiences and I hope to have similar ones myself! Great post!
